My Teaching Philosophy
My main goal as an artist and educator is to promote inclusivity and diversity to my audience and my students, breaking with preconceived notions of standard repertoire and standard representation. I believe my role as a teacher is to fully support my students in their individuality. My guidance extends beyond the musical journey: my mission is to transform lives through empathy, empowerment, and encouragement, regardless of what career path my students choose.
Learning to play the violin is about cultivating a curious and creative mind. I am always learning about new methods and techniques to help guide my students in finding innovative and individualized solutions for any technical and musical obstacles they may encounter. Working on technical issues, coupled with inventive and artistic solutions keeps the student engaged and empowered. Improvising, vocalizing, and visualization of the physicality of the music are some examples of my approach.
High quality education should be easily accessible and transcend socioeconomic barriers. Implementing interdisciplinary partnerships and introducing a diverse repertoire to my students are some of my goals to help promote social equity. That includes introducing my studio to the focus of my research during my DMA: Flausino Vale’s 26 Preludes for Solo Violin. The Preludes are a great way of introducing a violinist to South American music, and will serve as a way of accomplishing a solid technical foundation.
Music has the power to transform individuals and ensure that the community as a whole is successful. My hope is that through guidance, my students will eventually become their greatest teachers, express their unique artistic voice through the violin, and most importantly, become involved in the community.
